Waqf (Stopping)
Compulsory Stop

The meaning is complete. You should stop here and take a breath.
Preferred Stop
قلى
Stopping is preferred, but continuing is allowed if the meaning is maintained.
Uthmani onlyObligatory Stop
م
You must stop here. Continuing would change the meaning of the verse.
Permissible Pause
ج
You may stop or continue -- both are equally acceptable.
Embracing Stop
ۛ
Stop at one of the two marked positions, but not both. The pair indicates alternative stopping points.
Silent Pause
ۜ
Pause briefly without taking a breath, then continue reading.
Structural Markers
Quarter Hizb

Marks the beginning of a quarter-hizb division of the Quran. Used for organizing reading portions.
Uthmani onlyPlace of Sajdah

Indicates a verse where prostration (sajda tilawah) is recommended or required.
Ruku Marker
ع
Marks ruku (section) divisions used in organized prayer readings. This is a margin annotation in printed copies, not embedded in the digital text.
